Missouri State Reading Awards celebrate titles selected by students, library professionals, or other PreK-12 educators. The Gateway Readers Award winners(Grades9-12), Truman Readers Award winners(Grades6-8), Mark Twain Readers Award winners(4-6), and the Show Me Readers Award winners(Grades 1-3) are selected by students.

GATEWAY BOOK GUIDELINES

Books should interest teenagers in grades nine through twelve, be written by an author living in the United States, be of literary value which may enrich teenagers' personal lives, and be published two years prior to nomination on a Master List of 15 nominees. Consideration should also be given to genre diversity, gender representation, range of reading level (avoiding elementary levels), racial diversity, and social, political, economic, and religious viewpoints and be appropriate for teenagers.

Students in grades nine through twelve are eligible to vote for their favorite book if they have read at least THREE of the titles on the current master list. In March, students will vote for the book they liked best. Schools will design their own ballots and each student will get one vote. Votes are tallied by each school and entered into the online voting system.
